For this week’s #FF, Ben Broussard of @LaOilGasAssoc, talks about LOGA’s role in the energy industry.  We asked Ben just what the Louisiana Oil & Gas Association is:

LOGA is a 21-year-old, issues-based association of over 1,600 member companies — all of which have a vested interest in the continuance and growth of Louisiana’s oil & gas industry. We represent both the independent oil & gas producers as well as the contractors which provide necessary services for day-to-day E&P operations.  LOGA exists to proactively create incentives for the industry while warding off tax increases and burdensome regulations that would hinder activity.  We also work to educate the public and government on the importance of the oil & gas industry in Louisiana.

Are you the only person that tweets?  How did you decide to start tweeting?

I am part of a select team with LOGA which tweets from out account.  We have representatives from all over the state providing content and commentary — mostly focusing on their areas of specialization.  We decided to start tweeting as an association when we realized that there is a growing distrust of mainstream media.  Additionally, there is a substantial percentage of the public seeking comment on specific subjects from social media.

How long have you been tweeting?

We’ve been tweeting for probably four years — certainly we were one of the first oil & gas associations to set sail on the river of Twitter.  We’ve attracted over 7,200 followers — mainly because we work at providing insight and commentary on an extremely important subject: The energy industry (particularly as it pertains to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast).

What role does Twitter have for LOGA?

We found by studying Twitter that you have to provide something of value in order to gain a following.  LOGA is a respected organization and we would have no part in something that would not uphold or tarnish our integrity.  Our utilization of Twitter is to broaden our reach for advocacy and education on behalf of Louisiana’s oil and gas industry.  We have 1,600 member companies and individuals, however these are typically made-up of presidents, vice presidents, managers and the like.  Twitter allows us to communicate a very important message to rig hands, field personnel, college students, families, environmentalists, regulatory bodies, congressman… The list goes on.  Twitter helps to fulfill our initiative to educate not just our members and those we work with, but all of those who care to listen.

LOGA TV is a very comprehensive database of information.  How did you first get the idea to implement LOGA TV?

We are very excited about LOGA TV as a tool for educational outreach — both for the industry and the public.  We’ve been writing, and providing written education, for years.  People today are part of a YouTube culture which is not only attracted to educational video content but learn more because of its multi-sensory approach.   You see it, you hear it and thus you come away with a much better understanding of the subject matter.  LOGA TV has given us the opportunity to educate the industry on a weekly basis with our LOGA Drilling Report, which is a three-minute video detailing the current state of drilling activity in all sectors of Louisiana. The report includes the Haynesville Shale, TMS, north and south Louisiana land, inland water, state offshore waters and the Federal OCS deepwater picture.  We also cover permits on land and in deepwater, along with commodity prices.

Where can we go to learn more about LOGA?

Our website is a great way to learn more about what we do.
