UGI Utilities plans to soon introduce natural gas into pipeline installed in Tunkhannock Borough.

“We’re still working on the purging plan. That is imminent,” said Don Brominski, UGI business development director. “We are now actively giving executable service agreements to residents because by the time we’re ready to start installing services, gas will be in the line.”

As part of the GET Gas initiative, UGI contracted Linde Corp. to install 18,000 feet of 8” high density to pipe to allow Tunkhannock residents and businesses to hook up to natural gas for the first time.

Phase one of the project covered Harrison Street and Sunnyside Road with a gate station north of Shadowbrook Resort.

“We’re still wrapping up fencing and some grating, so I would say we’re just at the end right now,” Brominski said of phase one. “Paving should be happening this summer.”

Until this point, UGI has only been accepting applications for service, but now the process is moving along.

“Now we’re at the point where anyone along the line can sign the actual service agreement,” he said. “Once we have it, we can schedule the installation of the service line.”

The Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce received a $1 million grant from the Commonwealth Financing Authority in March to fund phase two of the project.

Phase two will involve installing pipe in additional portions of Tunkhannock, including portions of West Tioga Street as well as West Street, Maple Avenue, Susquehanna Avenue, Elk Street, Elm Street, Putnam Street, Warren Street, Harding Street, Slocum Avenue, Wyoming Avenue, Philadelphia Avenue, Franklin Avenue, Clay Street, Marion Street, Church Street, Pine Street, Stark Street and McCord Street.

“We’re going to try to avoid state roads due to restoration requirements,” he said.
