My Summer at Cabot – Guest Post by Samantha Scribner

[vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Readers, if you’ll recall my first blog post for Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, you’ll remember that I outlined exactly what I hoped to gain from my summer internship here. I’m pleased to say that of those goals and ideals, I had the opportunity and great fortune to meet and exceed each one. As my time at Cabot comes to a close, I’d like to take a few moments to share my experiences.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]One of the first sentences I spoke to George and Brittany during my interview and one of my first sentences in that original blog post was that I knew little about Marcellus Shale and natural gas drilling. After three months with Cabot, I feel like I could write a book about the amazing stuff that has been under my feet all this time. Though I’m far from an expert, I’ve both learned and witnessed first-hand more than just the fundamentals of Cabot’s operations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]My first trip to Susquehanna County, Pa., afforded me a custom rig tour from none other than Cabot’s own Bill desRosiers. I could have written an entire blog post about the sheer excitement of seeing a rig for the first time and learning the different parts. I’ve also been able to learn about the industry through daily research, reports and interviews with industry professionals.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]As an External Affairs Intern I had the unique experience of learning about water recycling, air quality, land reclamation and much more right alongside our blog readers and Twitter followers. Not only did I learn about Cabot’s hand in Marcellus shale development and extraction, but I also learned about and have become an unofficial advocate of natural gas as a clean fuel alternative. I closely follow anti-fracing groups and spokespeople and have to laugh sometimes at their stubborn refusal to consider any scientific facts that do not align with their viewpoint.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Surely every fossil fuel and energy source will bring challenges, but I’ve seen and read enough to know that natural gas is the nation’s best hope for sustainable, affordable and perhaps most importantly, domestic, energy.  It took no persuasion from Cabot or any industry group for me to learn this truth; it only took an open mind and research of pure, scientific facts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Not only did I wish for an enhanced knowledge of the industry, but also for a quality public relations experience. As a public relations major soon to graduate from Waynesburg University, I’ve found my internship to be of the utmost value to my career ambitions. Brittany and George have provided me with autonomy and trust in all of my duties, and under their direction I have grown to understand and practice multiple aspects of public relations.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]From helping to plan an incredibly successful event with more than 7,000 attendees to blogging and tweeting daily from a corporate account, I’ve seen the impact that community outreach can have on a company and on the people that company serves. I’ve also had the rare internship opportunity to present my work to the CFO of a large company and to work with external contractors to bring a project to fruition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Much to my delight, I’ve even learned to decode some of the industry’s acronyms and jargons and how to communicate and spell them for my blog posts. I’m truly excited to return to Waynesburg University, located in Greene County, Pa. (which is experiencing its own Marcellus shale boom) and join the conversation about natural gas and hydraulic fracturing.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Of course, I couldn’t have done any of this without Brittany Thomas, who has been a teacher, an editor and a friend throughout this whole experience. George Stark trusted me to do a good job and provided incredible advice about everything from interviewing experts to planning a wedding. Bill desRosiers took me on my first tour of Dimock, Pa, and displayed incredible kindness throughout my internship. All of these people and so many more made saying goodbye to Cabot a truly bittersweet moment.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]But enough sentimentality, it’s not my style any way. I hope you enjoyed reading about Cabot Crew members, new videos, drilling techniques and much more this summer. Please continue to read Cabot’s blog as it will continue to provide you with the latest Susquehanna County news and developments, even in my absence. Thank you all for supporting me by reading and commenting on my posts. Please do so for the new intern as well![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Samantha Scribner[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image css_animation=”” image=”1256″ border_color=”” img_link_large=”” link=”http://cabotsusq.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/photo-22.jpg” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image css_animation=”” image=”1257″ border_color=”” img_link_large=”” link=”http://cabotsusq.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/photo-32.jpg” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image css_animation=”” image=”1258″ border_color=”” img_link_large=”” link=”http://cabotsusq.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/photo-4.jpg” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image css_animation=”” image=”1259″ border_color=”” img_link_large=”” link=”http://cabotsusq.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/photo-5.jpg” img_link_target=”_self” img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
