Can you tell us a little bit about your involvement with Cabot?Bill Carlson: Cabot approached us about leasing our farmland in 2007. They began drilling and frac’ing in 2010 and by 2011 they started producing gas from a number of wells on our land. That’s when we started receiving our royalties.
[/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]How did the royalties impact your life?Bill Carlson (laughs): Well, we aren’t going wild, buying fast cars and hitting the casinos or whatever. For us, the greatest thing about the extra income is having more options to enjoy our retirement, to feel financially secure and to be able to share our good fortune with our family members. And, of course, it has allowed us to become even more active and generous when it comes to giving to charitable organizations.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]How do you choose which charities to support?Bill Carlson: Because of our strong faith, it’s important for us to support charities that reflect the spirit that shines through the teachings of Jesus Christ. That being said, we consider and have contributed to both large and small charitable organizations with excellent reputations and financials. The vast majority of the money a charity receives has to go toward the cause it’s supporting. We do our homework carefully because there are too many wonderful, fiscally responsible organizations out there to waste money on those that aren’t.

But to name a few…we support WPEL, a Christian radio station based in Montrose. We’ve also donated toward the new hospital construction by the Endless Mountains Health Systems and we’re proud supporters of The Salvation Army. Talk about a ripple effect…their programs are local, national and international in scope and include anti-pornography, housing and homeless services, missing persons, community care, disaster relief, adult rehabilitation, elderly services and combating human trafficking. We all benefit from their services because these are issues that affect society and the world as a whole.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row animation=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]How about other charities that are important to you?Bill Carlson: Our church, Hopewell United Methodist, is a congregation that’s on fire for the Lord. We help the church support an incredible range of programs that benefit the lives of people in Pennsylvania and internationally through the church’s Beyond the Walls program. We’re also fond of Good Samaritan Shelter, which provides safe, comfortable housing for people in need and helps guests regain stability in their lives by teaching them life, career and financial independence skills.
