Pipelines however, can carry more than just natural gas. There are water lines, crude oil lines, propane etc. Any one or a combination of these lines could be underneath your property. An important rule of pipeline safety is to call before you dig. We have featured 811 on Well Said in the past. 811 is the federally-mandated national “Call Before You Dig” number that was established to protect you from accidentally hitting underground utility lines.

The slogan “Call Before You Dig,” doubles as simple instructions. When you call 811 you get connected to a local call center and describe your digging project to the operator. The call center will then inform your utilities company to come out and mark your lines allowing you to dig safely.
